About our institution

The School of Media and Communication at Murdoch University delivers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Perth, Singapore and Dubai. The School is active in the community with strong industry links in all disciplines, offering real world learning experiences to a diverse student body. Academics undertake both traditional and non-traditional research informing teaching and learning, industry practice and discipline knowledge. Our Communication program is delivered across our three locations, spanning several areas of specialisation including Strategic Communication, Journalism, Web Communication and Global Media and Communication. Our Creative Media program is delivered primarily in Perth with specialisations in Screen Production, Sound, Graphic Design, Design Thinking, Photography and Games Art and Design.

About this role

The Communication team seeks a talented senior academic to contribute to the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research programs (the position is based at the South Street campus, Perth). Such contributions will require the successful candidate to unit coordinate, and deliver lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials in semester and trimester modes. The successful candidate will also be required to conduct high quality research, supervise Honours, postgraduate coursework and Higher Degree by Research students. Service to the Discipline and University is expected through contribution to School and University committees. Where appropriate, it is expected that the candidate will foster and maintain strong external relationships through industry and research collaborations.

On any given day, you will be responsible for:

• Preparing and delivering classes in a range of face-to-face, online, and blended models.

• Designing and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate units in all locations, engaging with innovative teaching and learning methods.

• Supervising Honours, postgraduate coursework and HDR student projects from proposal to examination.

• Contributing to research, individually and/or as a member of a team, and produce quality research outputs.

• Contributing to applications for research funds, individually and/or as a part of a team.

• Contributing to the School through industry, research and curriculum leadership.


Selection criteria
  • A PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Extensive, substantial experience in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in communication and related disciplines such as Strategic Communication and Public Relations, Media and Cultural Studies, and Digital/Web Communication.
  • A track record of success in producing high quality research outputs that have international impact and influence.
  • A track record of success in attracting external competitive research funding that has national and/or international impact.
  • A high level of achievement in successfully supervising Honours, Masters by Coursework, HDR and postgraduate students to completion.
  • A record of success in the application of curriculum design and pedagogy, including substantial experience with leading and designing programs of study.
  • Demonstrated links with relevant industry groups and external stakeholders that will advance the teaching and research interests of the discipline, the College and the University.
  • Demonstrated high levels of written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, past success in working effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team and demonstrated success as a leader in teaching and learning, research, and administrative activities.
